Uncanny Valley Review

So this past week I finished my playthrough of Uncanny Valley. It’s a seriously disturbing game and I think it’s awesome. I may have also possibly gotten the worst ending possible, but who knows. I know there’s stuff that I missed, and I am planning to go back and play it again later, try out different things, different timings of what I do, etc. All in all I think it was a really good game, it had a really good atmosphere, and told an overall pretty decent story. During my time playing I did come across a couple of graphical glitches, nothing major though, and no real major bugs that I noticed. The one thing I would change about the game is how the save file works. So here’s the main menu:

Uncanny Valley Main Menu

The menu doesn’t change regardless of whether you’re part way through the game or not. So you can easily click continue even if you’ve never loaded up the game before (of course this causes an error since there’s no save file). So the thing is that the game doesn’t support multiple saves, something that overall is not a really big deal, but, if you happen to click Play instead of Continue by accident when you’re part way through the game your save file is automatically deleted. There’s no prompt asking if you’re sure you want to start a new game. Nothing to tell you that if you click your save will be deleted. Just nothing.

So I know what you’re thinking, just don’t click Play by accident. Well thing is that overall the word Play doesn’t imply new game automatically. I could just as easily see it as continue to Play. And yes, it does say Continue just above that, but still, that’s not the main focus when you look at the screen. I would have probably changed the Play option to New Game, which automatically makes what’s going to happen more obvious. I would also probably add some code to detect whether there is an existing save file and if there is prompt the player to confirm if they want to start a new game since it will delete their current save file.

As you can imagine, I am actually only focusing on this because…well….because I accidentally clicked Play when I was halfway through my playthrough and had to start over just to finish recording my video series. And honestly, if this is my biggest gripe with the game, I would it’s a pretty good game! Cowardly Creations will be definitely getting my money for any future games that they make.
